Information, Advice and Guidance for Adults

Millar MacDonald, DfEE

Key Issues:

  • Participants voiced very serious concerns about the underfunding of guidance, which is disappearing in some areas. There is significant investment in the Information, Advice and Guidance Infrastructure, yet much of it is housed in guidance outlets which are disappearing. This is not a sustainable position.

  • There is a need for a national brand for IAG. One is currently being developed and will be launched in the near future. Local branding is under development logo is not available soon, there will be resistance to its use because people will prefer their own.

Other points emerging:

  • There is a huge range of experience and awareness within the IAG network, and concern that the necessary understanding does not reside in the Learning Partnerships, given the size of their brief.

  • More strategic guidelines are needed for Learning Partnerships in this and similar issues.

  • The requirement for qualifications at level 3 mitigates against voluntary/community involvement. Some innovative initiatives ensured that volunteers were qualified at level 1, but they cannot now be funded.
