Assessment of learning needs 17 We will put in place practical arrangements so that all prisoners in custody or as part of their release arrangements will have access to a full assessment of their learning needs and a supporting individual learning plan. The assessment tools used will build on best practice developed as part of our national adult literacy and numeracy strategy - so that in future the assessment will both identify a wider range of learning needs in prison and on resettlement. The provision of clear information, advice and guidance about learning and work will be an integral part of the process. There will be regular opportunities for further assessment and review of progress throughout sentence, so that the initial assessment, in many instances, will be the first step towards the individual’s rehabilitation.
