Introduction by Naomi Sargant

I have been engaged both in adult learning and technology at the Open University and in broadcasting. In this session we try to focus on what broadcasting can do very precisely for adult learning.

When we think of the power of broadcasting, we recognise that it is available in most countries as the key way of reaching large numbers of people, free at the point of use in their own homes. We do not use it as much for our purposes as we could do. In the transition period, before all the new technologies become freely available, and in the period before digital is available to more than perhaps 20% of us, our challenge is to use broadcasting as much and as strongly as we can, while we plan for that more complicated future.

Lucia Jones will give us the main points which came out of an earlier session.

Lucia Jones:

We should:

  • focus on learners
  • give learners the tools to create their own content
  • integrate public and private approaches
  • identify the new creative skills that are needed to produce effective educational content in the new technological environment
  • learn an awful lot more about creating effective learning through different media formats
  • make learning fun
  • articulate a new role for teachers
  • create much greater coherence at European policy level
  • regulate not against things but for things, like universal access
  • recognise that the mania for measuring things makes learning boring.
